In his own words: Founder/CEO Richard Price
Rebuilding the academic publishing system
I was doing a PhD of Philosophy, and I wanted an easy way to share my papers online. At the time, academics had to build their own homepages to share papers, and for those who did not have websites, their papers were nowhere to be found. The vision we started with was to openly share papers online and to do so rapidly with your colleagues.
My first paper took three years to get published. One journal just sat on it for three years. Delays in getting published raised the impetus for people to share papers online rapidly, but there was no good system for doing so.In talking to every single partner at KV, it was clear just how much they care about science and tackling hard and important problems.
Now, we have over 100,000 papers being shared on Academia.edu each day with 21 million users and 35 million monthly visitors. We’re rebuilding the whole academic publishing system from the ground up, which means a new distribution system and a new peer review system. We've now proven that uploading a paper to our platform gets you 83-percent more citations.
Over time, it became apparent that we need to take a new approach to peer review as well as distribution. Now, we're working on a new approach to peer review that will make it much faster and allow more than just two people to be involved in the process. Today, peer review is really slow. It takes 12 months and often times, it’s not reproducible and there isn’t a high degree of accuracy.
KV adds a lot of value to the companies they invest in with a lot of resources on hand, and accomplished people who are there to help.

Discipline for the long term
I work most closely with Ben and Keith. Just being able to share frequent updates about the business and getting strategic input on the problems we face is really very helpful especially since they are intimately familiar with operational challenges from the perspective of a small stage startup to a later stage company. There’s good discipline in terms of crafting business strategies for the long term. KV adds a lot of value to the companies they invest in with a lot of resources on hand, and accomplished people who are there to help. It's fairly unique, and it's really great to see.
